Training for Your First 5K
If you’ve never taken part in any running activities, running any distance will feel like a marathon to you. If you were to enter yourself into a 5K, you would need to put in just as much effort as what a marathon runner needs to put in when they train for a real marathon. If you do happen to be in this type of position where you need to begin training for your first 5K, then I’d like to point you in the right direction.
Step 1 – Establish a Training Routine
You will hardly ever find a serious runner training every day, and those runners who do try to do so, usually end up falling by the wayside before long. Professional runners know that their bodies need time to recover after a training session, and the same thing applies to you even if you’re only just starting out. Instead of running every day, you need to focus more on consistency. For example, you could establish a routine where you go for a twenty minute run three times each week, and then once your fitness level begins to improve, you could increase it to four times each week, and you could also add on an extra five minutes or so.
If you force yourself to go running every day, you’ll almost certainly start suffering from fatigue, and of course there’s also a strong chance that you’ll end up injuring yourself. When this happens, you’re simply become despondent and give up.
Step 2 – Moderation
The most common mistake people make when they first start running is they try to achieve too much too soon. It’s almost as if new runners feel they need to gain some ground, and in most cases they try to do this by running several miles every day. Unfortunately, this approach never works, so it’s something you need to avoid doing at all costs. Instead of trying to push yourself too hard, rather slack off a little bit because you’ll actually end up gaining more from running less miles, providing you keep at it.
In fact, you have every reason to be proud of yourself even if you only run one mile per day during the early stages of your training, bearing in mind that you can increase the distance anytime you wish once you feel you can do so without putting your body under too much stress.
Step 3 – Enjoy Yourself
Enjoying yourself is without a doubt the most important factor as far as running is concerned. If you can’t have fun when you run, you more than likely won’t want to continue running for very long, and if that’s the case, then there’s no point in training for your first 5K. So many people who decide to take up the running tend to see it as being something which is extremely demanding, and an activity which takes up a considerable amount of their time. People who feel this way really need to acknowledge the fact that they don’t enjoy running in the first place, and as such, they would be better off finding an alternative sport.
Running can be a huge amount of fun, and of course it has so many potential health benefits as well. If you’re just about to start training for your first 5K, simply try and remember the three steps which have been discussed in this article, because if you can apply all three of them to your own running ambitions, you will definitely be successful.
