How I Ran My Fastest 5K by using a 5K Running Program!

 

I started running at the age of thirty four. I was never a runner, and wasn’t really one to exercise at all.

Now that I was done having children, and I wanted to start getting healthy I decided to begin working out with a personal fitness trainer. I wanted to feel good about myself, and to have the energy to keep up with my three children. After a month of fitness training, my personal trainer asked me to run one mile, and I thought this would be an easy task. I finished the one mile, almost at a crawl. I had to walk a majority of the time, and felt exhausted and terrible when I finished.  I was disappointed, and discouraged with myself. How do other runners do this?

At this time, I decided to make some goals for myself. If I was going to be healthy, I was going to start training. I looked for a training schedule.  With the help of a trainer, I was able to run that one mile without stopping after a few months of training. Now, I was a runner! I fell in love with the thrill and challenges of running. It was so internal, and personal. Now that I could run one mile, I wanted to run faster and farther. I wanted to beat my own personal best. Now this meant I had to train harder. But I also wanted to train correctly, so that I would be able to do my best and reach my goals without injury. And I wanted to make sure I had the right equipment.

I looked into other resources, so that I could get more information.  After some research, I decided to run my first 5K. This is a little over 3 miles. I knew if I could run 1 mile, I would be able to run 3; after some training of course.  I started to run a little farther with my runs, and then my trainer told me about a local 4K race and she encouraged me to sign up for it. 4 kilometers is almost 2 ½ miles. Running a 5K race seemed attainable, so I was comfortable running a 4K with a little extra training since it was a month away. I ran this 4K race, and felt wonderful! The accomplishment was so fulfilling and I felt proud of myself. I wanted to train for my first 5k run.

Now that I had the experience of a race, I wanted to do another one. I did some research on 5K racing, and set my mind on  running a 5K race. I then signed myself up for my first 5K race. These races became “mini-goals” for me, and I was experiencing the “runners-high”.  After I used my own “personal training plan” for a 5K, I ran my first 5K race and felt that I needed to be faster. I wanted to be faster and stronger. I didn’t know what else I could do to make myself a faster runner without causing injury to myself. I wanted to find a 5k running program for running a 5k race.  I looked into 5K training plans, and that is when I found the 5K training program,  I Want To Run a 5k.
